Braking in and around corners: when to brake, when to trail brake

- Pre-turn braking: Reduce speed while the bike is upright. This uses maximum traction and leaves you freer to steer correctly into the corner.

Braking on different surfaces and in poor conditions
Grip varies dramatically with surface and contaminants. Adjust your braking technique to the available traction.
- Wet surfaces: Increase stopping distances and apply brakes more progressively. Avoid sudden inputs and prefer more rear-brake support. If your bike has ABS, rely on it for front-wheel modulation.
- Loose gravel, sand or dirt: Use mainly rear brake and very light front pressure. The rear tends to be more forgiving and helps keep the bike tracking straight.

Using ABS and electronic aids without becoming dependent
Anti-lock braking systems (ABS), combined with traction control and linked brakes, change how riders should apply inputs but they don’t replace skill. ABS prevents wheel lock-up under heavy braking but can’t create traction that doesn’t exist.
- How to use ABS: Apply firm, continuous pressure on the brake levers/pedal during hard stops and trust the system to pulse as needed. Don’t pump the brakes on ABS-equipped bikes—pumping interferes with its intended function.
- Limitations: ABS will not prevent a slide if you exceed tire traction limits or attempt hard braking while leaned far over. - Electronics as a crutch: Use electronic aids to improve safety, but continue to practice manual control and low-speed braking skills. Electronics can reduce the consequences of errors but are not a substitute for anticipation and decision-making.

Maintenance, tires and checks that affect braking performance
